Peace and Plenty

Two stained glass Greek Goddess style windows fondly called Peace and Plenty watch over the house from the dining room.
Plenty, shown on the left, has a potato on her shoulder.

Dr. Cassidy left Ireland as a child during the time of the Irish Potato Famine, which resulted in the large influx of Irish to America. So, it makes sense that this window with an overflowing cornucopia would also include a potato.

Dining room

         Are these Tiffany Windows?

No, but they are similar to the work done by the Tiffany Glass Works.

In the early 1880s, when Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge gained notoriety, artists created window scenes in the medieval style, by painting on clear glass. Tiffany believed that using colored glass allowed form to be defined by the glass itself rather than by painting onto the glass
Facial features, hands, feet, etc were the only portions that were painted.  The Tiffany Glass works became famous for the glass they manufactured and the quality and variety of the windows, lamps, and objects d'art produced there. As their popularity grew others imitated their style and produced similar glass and windows.

Meet Peace (left) and Plenty (right).
The windows are firmly held in place by metal rods soldered to the leading. Custom built shutters cover them at night.

Portions of the windows are bent and bow out precariously, not surprising when you consider they are over 110 years old. They will have to be taken down and re-leaded in the next few years to prevent further damage. This will be a delicate, time consuming operation since they are nearly 7 feet tall. Any miscalculation or sudden movement during the removal process could cause the bent leading to fail and the glass to shatter.

One of two windows that sit on each side of Peace and Plenty. These windows also have built in shutters.

Note the center blue piece of jeweled glass, which is shown in detail below.

Peace has a dove above her head and holds a basket overflowing with flowers.   Note how the fingers are painted on the hand. The arm is also painted to give it depth.  But the skirt relies on the shades and texture of the glass to give it shape.

Floral detail from Peace's basket.

There is no front or back to the windows. The features are painted on both sides of the glass.  You can stand inside or outside and Peace looks straight at you.

Jewel Glass

Hall

Transom window over the front doors.   This is on the inside of the entrance vestibule.  On the other side, just above the front doors the window still has the gold lettering that says "Dr. Cassidy".  Note the yellow glass at the bottom.  This picture doesn't do it justice.  The light coming through the window made to yellow glow like gold.

North Bedroom

North bedroom's stained glass windows. There are two more on the sides of the alcove.

Animal damage is evident in the teeth marks on the left window's sill. Maybe it was that stinker Rocky the Raccoon. We met him (her?) one day as he crawled up an adjacent bedroom wall, working his way between two exposed studs. Scratch, scratch, scratch!  Rocky shared the house with us during the first year and could be quite noisy. He met an untimely death underneath the dumpster one rainy night.   Squish...
