| South
side of the 1800 sq ft wrap around
porch, before reconstruction. |
 |
In 2001 we finished decking the south side of the porch. The
siding on the left side of the picture will have to be
replaced.
A
few months later, as we poured a few bags of loose
insulation between the back walls, a friend in the back
yard started yelling. When I poked my head out the
window it looked like smoke was pouring out of the
walls, but in fact it was insulation dust! So much
for saving the siding on the back of the house. |

 |
New
posts cost $600 each, so we will save all we can. The one on
the corner, and the next one down can probably be saved.
<--- A friend just before the ladder began to
slowly slide down the pole, causing him great concern, but no
injury, thankfully! |

Notice the missing piece of roof.
The main roof channeled rain down a valley onto the porch roof
in this spot, causing an 8 ft high hole in the 2nd floor
exterior wall. We had to remove that portion of porch roof in
order to put up scaffolding to repair the wall. There were carpenter ants in the
missing post. |
This is lumber that we planed smooth on
one side. Notice the thickness.
We buy freshly cut lumber from a local
mill, plane and cut it to size in order to match the
original wood. It's a slow process but worth it in both
cost savings and aesthetics. |

A
member of the Doxy Patrol surveys the back yard for marauding
squirrels, ever watchful for attack from below or above.
The brown object in the upper right hand portion of the photo
is an All
Waste dumpster. We have been doing business with
them for 4 years. I highly recommend this company if you need
a dumpster in the Hartford or Southeastern CT
area.
In the photo the deck
appears to be only a few feet above the ground, but it is
actually 18-feet high. Notice the uneven edges
on the deck. We won't straighten them out until we
rebuild and install the extensive (10ft high) decorative trim that
goes under the deck. |
